I am writing regarding the recently published Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines
special articles “Remission of Type 2 Diabetes” (
2
) and “Remission of type 2 diabetes: User’s guide” (
1
). I see these articles as an acknowledgment from the mainstream medical community
that it is indeed possible to normalize blood sugars for an uncertain timespan after
a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. I also applaud the authors’ sincere efforts at recognizing
the limitations of these approaches. I was heartened to read that the psychological
impacts of weight stigma and “failure” to achieve remission were given significant
attention in these articles. However, as a dietitian who works with patients with
diabetes, I do not agree with the Grade A Level 1A recommendation for diabetes remission
through weight loss using temporary, extremely low-calorie diets. To read this article in full you will need to make a payment
